Alliance of Civilizations: Reducing Tensions between Muslim and Western Nations / 2006

Synopsis: In November 2006, Istanbul hosted the launch of a report aiming at reducing tensions between Muslim and Western nations. The report by the Alliance of Civilizations suggests that “the repression of political opposition and the slow pace of reforms in some Muslim countries are a key factor in the rise of extremism groups”. The Alliance of Civilizations, an initiative by the Turkish and Spanish governments, brings together internationally prominent scholars, politicians and world religious leaders; and aims to bridge divides and promote dialogue between societies. The Turkish prime minister, Tayyip Erdogan, and the Spanish prime minister, Jose Luis Rodrigues Zapatero, presented the report to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

Bahraini Women: Making History / 2006

Synopsis: 2006 was a historical year for Bahraini women. In June, Shaikha Haya Rashed Al Khalifa became the first Arab Muslim woman to hold the post of the President of the United Nations General Assembly and in November, Bahrain became the first Gulf State to elect a woman parliamentarian. Eighteen women were among more than 200 candidates who ran for office in the parliamentary and municipal elections. One woman, Lateefa Al Gaood, ran unopposed and won by default - opening a historical chapter for women’s political rights in the Gulf region. Other women were appointed to high-level political posts. These women leaders have set historical precedents and have paved the way forward for women’s political rights in the region - the beginning of a long uphill struggle.

Synopsis: A small car repair workshop in Port-au-Prince is converting used cooking oil into bio-diesel. The fuel can be used to run generators and even vehicles. A scaled up production would also use Jatropha seeds, which also help prevent soil erosion.

Synopsis: The coconut is one of the most useful and extensively grown nuts in the world, and India is one of its largest producers. A poverty stricken community has found itself reinvigorated through a project that utilizes previously discarded coconut husks. They now produce coconut oil, handicrafts, and textiles, among other commodities. The initiative has been nominated for the Equator Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Sustainable Development.

Synopsis: Fistula is a common problem worldwide. It was eradicated in most Western countries over the last century, but remained a concern for women in developing countries. Through the efforts of the UN Population Fund, UNFPA, some 500 surgical procedures were completed at the Dhaka hospital in Bangladesh. A global campaign aims to eliminate fistula by 2015. Now, more women are opting for surgery as they seek to live a quality life.

Synopsis: For the past two years the European Union and the United Nations have funded and managed a major de-mining project in the divided capital of Nicosia in Cyprus. The landmines are a deadly legacy of the inter-communal violence that plagued the island over 30 years ago. Landmines are indiscriminate, cause horrific injuries as well as death. Their clearance is not only helping make Cyprus safer but it is hoped it will encourage further dialogue between the divided Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities.

Synopsis: A 16th century masterpiece, the ‘Saliera’, has found its way into the hands of nuclear detectives and 21st century technology. The Renaissance sculpture by Benvenuto Cellini was found buried in Austria’s northwest woods after its highly publicized theft in 2003. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has loaned its museum a specialized X-ray instrument to aid in the restoration and preservation of the piece.

Synopsis: The Philippines has one of the lowest rates of HIV infection in the region. Nevertheless, widespread sex work, inconsistent condom use, and lack of sexual education could trigger a more serious epidemic. Boracay Island, a thriving tourist resort, now has a committed group of volunteers: the ‘Butterfly Brigade’. They are helping raise awareness and eliminate discrimination, while spreading the message that sex should be safe.

Synopsis: Some 1500 Greek Cypriots and 500 Turkish Cypriots are officially registered as missing. They disappeared during the inter-communal clashes in the 1960’s and during the partition of the island in 1974. But after many decades, this thorny issue could finally be resolved. The UN and the Cyprus Committee on Missing Persons represented by both Turkish and Greek Cypriots is tasked with overseeing exhumations of suspected graves throughout the island. Confirming the identities of hundreds of missing persons and returning the remains to their families, will hopefully end the suffering, lessen the bitterness and heal this Mediterranean nation.

Synopsis: Uganda is dealing with the hangover of war. Many of its children are abducted by militias and taken away from their families. The effect of the conflict on children in Uganda is hard to quantify but for some of the girls their lives are ruined forever. UNICEF is working with these girls to help them get back on track.

Synopsis: The UN Mission in Cyprus, UNFICYP, patrols the cease-fire lines between the Turkish Cypriot North and the Greek Cypriot South. The situation remains calm throughout the island, but the bitterness between the two divided communities’ remains. The UN patrols help to defuse tensions and keep channels of dialogue open, until an agreement on a comprehensive settlement can be worked out between the disputing parties.
